Abstract:   (2 Views)
Traditional approaches to defining art, aiming for certainty, comprehensiveness, and exclusivity, emphasize necessary and sufficient conditions. In contrast, avant-garde artists strive to transcend conventional constraints and dismantle definitional boundaries. Consequently, the issue of definition within the field of art has become entangled in rapid transformations and widespread controversies. Established art theories, including representationalism, expressionism, formalism, and even institutional theory, are no longer adequate to account for novel artistic forms and genres. Thus, a fresh approach to defining art is essential. This study, adopting an innovative perspective on art, its definitions, and theories, proposes a network-based structural model for understanding and developing this concept. Employing a qualitative approach and a descriptive-analytical method, the researchers identified prevalent approaches to defining art, categorizing them into six broad groups based on their perspective. Subsequently, drawing upon Ludwig Wittgenstein's insights regarding the problem of definition, a network model based on the core components of the artwork—artist, audience, nature, and society—was developed. The proposed network framework not only facilitates the acceptance of novel artistic forms and theories but also provides the necessary flexibility to comprehend the dynamic nature of cultural transformations.
