Abstract:   (21 Views)
This study analyzes the methods of deterritorialization from the narrative centers of the image in the cinema of Terrence Malick, with a particular emphasis on a Deleuzian perspective. Gilles Deleuze, the renowned philosopher and film theorist, with his concepts of the movement-image, the time-image, and the construct of deterritorialization, provided a framework for analyzing the rupture from traditional narratives and the creation of new interpretive spaces in cinema. Malick, known for his unique visual style and poetic presentation of philosophical themes, utilizes improvised images and non-linear narrative configurations in the selected works of this study, namely Knight of Cups (2015) and Song to Song (2017). This approach can be seen as a redefinition of territory in the cinematographic image. Therefore, this research seeks to answer the question: "Are the methods of deterritorialization from the narrative centers of the image in Terrence Malick's cinema analyzable from a Deleuzian perspective?"
The visual territories in Malick's cinema are in constant flux, and the narrative centers are fragmented. This deterritorialized state in his narrative style reveals a kind of subjectivity or a philosophical and intuitive perception through the image, which can lead to a different kind of film-watching experience. This qualitative study is expected to demonstrate, through the analysis of this visual display, how movement-images and time-images exit their own territories, are reconstituted in other territories, and why this deterritorialization from narrative centers in Malick's films is directly aligned with Deleuze's theories. This, in turn, suggests that the inventiveness of the intellectual/visual space presented in Malick's cinema makes it amenable to a redefinition of storytelling in the cinematographic image.
